Meet the Northern Double Drummer – the heavy-metal rock star of Australia’s insect world. Every summer from September to April, this chunky cicada straps on his built-in double drum kit and unleashes a screaming, high-pitched solo loud enough to rattle windows. December and January are peak tour season, when thousands of these tiny headbangers gather in eucalyptus trees for an all-out sound war. Females don’t make a peep, so the boys compete like crazed drummers on stage, hoping to impress the ladies. If you’re in Humpty Doo on a hot night, congratulations – you’ve got front-row tickets!
